Why We're Raising Money

In addition to supporting the programs of Dragonheart Vermont, fundraising for the LCBDF in 2025 also helps to support the programs of the Mahana Magic Foundation and Sail Beyond Cancer VT

Dragonheart Vermont strives to strengthen and empower breast cancer survivors & supporters through the challenging sport of dragon boating instilling in its members the values of teamwork, fitness & community giving.

The Mahana Magic Foundation supports children through a parent or guardian’s cancer journey. They are centered around making children feel understood, connected, and nurtured through gentle support groups and thoughtfully created programs. The true magic lies within the hearts that connect during life's toughest moments.

The Vermont chapter of Sail Beyond Cancer provides patients, caregivers and families a unique opportunity to share important time together while enjoying the beauty of sailing. These experiences allow them to fulfill the beliefs of their parent organization: We believe in the importance of taking time to celebrate life’s beauty together, and we do so by providing a unique therapeutic recreational experience for the whole family.

Festival Artist

Every year, the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival solicits a local artist to create a print for us. Our artist for 2024 was Gretchen Alexander. We'll post our 2025 print as soon as it is available!

Gretchen Alexander draws on over twenty years as a river ecologist to inspire her art. Primarily working in acrylics and watercolor, her work ranges from impressionistic to conceptual with the common thread of exploring the interconnectedness of the natural world. As an avid explorer of the outdoors, she enjoys allowing her every-day observations guide her in her artistic process. She paints in her home studio and the outdoors full-time.

Gretchen grew up surrounded by the artwork of her grandfather, renowned New England landscape painter Emile A. Gruppe, and undoubtedly this has had an influence on her artistic interests and style. However, her educational background in aquatic ecology also has a strong influence and drives her interest in the intersection of science and the arts, often coming through in her more conceptual and illustrative pieces that aim to convey ideas around natural processes and scales of life. You can find more of Gretchen’s work on her website: www.gretchenalexanderart.com
